I grew up in South Carolina, inland from Myrtle Beach. During my early years my family lived in desperate poverty.
After high school I enlisted in the Marine Corps and served at a number of duty stations, one of which was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga CVA 60 based at Mayport, FL. I later served with the 2nd Marine Division (6th and 8th. Marines), Camp Lejeune, NC. My active military tour of duty was completed at Parris Island, South Carolina. I served another seven years in the Marine Corps Reserves from which I have two Honorable Discharges for my military service. After active duty service and went to college on the G I Bill.
While serving a four-year hitch in the Marines I met and married my present and only wife. We have a daughter and son, 2 grandchildren. Needless to say I have spent my share of time with the grandbabies watching them roll those big blue eyes at me.
Our daughter is a graduate of Shorter College and former commercial property management executive. Since having her first child she has since been a stay-at-home mom. Our son and his wife graduated from The University of Alabama. She is also a graduate of The University of Alabama School of Law, and is a practicing attorney in Tuscaloosa. We set high standards for our kids and taught them family values that will follow them through life. Moving up in the business world has not been easy for them, so hopefully they will understand the value of hard work.
My wife and I spend time with our grandchildren at sporting events and around the house doing the things that grandparents do. She takes the elderly without transportation shopping for groceries and to doctor’s appointment, and spends a lot of time listening to their needs. Some of my time is spent with needy or disabled children that have no dad or big brother. A real joy is taking less fortunate kids (mom’s and dad’s if available) to the ice cream shop or on a long ride in my special car. Giving to the needy, handicapped, poor, and orphans brings a joy that only those who give can understand. It makes my day to see joy and happiness on faces of children the world passes by every day. They have feelings and hurt just like you and me.
Past, present, and future I am what I am, a Southern Baptist. I believe in Jesus Christ and accept him as my personal Lord and Saviour. Without him our family would not have made it through the hard times. |
